Obituary

Richard Roy Kumler, 68, LaFontaine, passed away at his daughter's home at 3:10 am on Sunday, February 19, 2012. He was born in Kewanna, IN on August 26, 1943 to the late Loren D. and Lois I. (Tomlinson) Kumler. He married Nancy Jean Walters on September 4, 1966. She passed away in 1995. Richard graduated from Kewanna High School in 1961. He attended Purdue University and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1968, and a Master's degree in 1969, both in education. He served our country in the United States Navy Submarine Service from 1961-1965.  He was a Social Studies Teacher at Marion High School for 36 years. He was a member of LaFontaine United Methodist Church. Richard held many memberships in the LaFontaine area including, LaFontaine Masonic Lodge 295. He was raised to the degree of Master Mason in 1966 and also served as past Master and Secretary for 10 years. He was also a member of the LaFontaine Order of the Eastern Star, Scottish Rite 32nd degree, Van Buren American Legion Post 368, and the Troyer Memorial Library Board. He is survived by a son, Robert (Kim) Kumler, LaFontaine; a daughter, Andrea (Kip) Benbow, LaFontaine; a brother, Robert (Darla) Kumler, Rochester; and a sister, Patricia Hoover, also of Rochester. He is preceded in death by a brother-in-law, George Hoover, along with his parents and wife. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 10:00 am at LaFontaine United Methodist Church, with Pastors Brad Garrett and Larry Ray officiating. Calling for friends and family will be held at McDonald Funeral Home, LaFontaine Chapel, 104 S. Main Street, LaFontaine, IN 46940 on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with Masonic Services to begin at 7:30 pm. Burial will be at I.O.O.F Cemetery in LaFontaine. Preferred Memorial may be directed to the American Cancer Society, or the current building fund at LaFontaine United Methodist Church.
