Obituary

Gary Andrew Whitener, 66 of Portland, Tennessee, passed away at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at his home. He was formerly of Wabash, Indiana. He was born to the late Harry Andrew and Ruth Mae (Holman) Whitener on December 12, 1945 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. He was a Southwood High School graduate. He was formerly married to Nancy (Sutton) Whitener, she survives in Wabash. He served his country in the United States Navy  as a flight mechanic. His faith was Baptist Affiliated. He worked at Walmart in Springfield, Tennessee. Gary spent most of his life in the lumber and home improvement sales industry. He is also survived by a son, James D. Crager (Kemberle) of Urbana, Indiana; two daughters, Shelley Rhoades (Rodney) and Christy Swango both of Wabash, Indiana; brother, Jerry Whitener (Pam) of Portland, Tennessee; sister, Rita Schultz (Richard) of Stuart, Florida; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Daugherty of Indianapolis, Megan Kerr of Elwood, Aaron Rhoades of Wabash, Kayla Rhoades of Wabash, Keith Fearnow of Fort Wayne, Kyle Fearnow of Sheridan, Wyoming, and Laura Fearnow of Urbana and a great grandchild, Nash Christian Ellis of Urbana; and several nieces and nephews. Gary loved spending time with his grandchildren, nieces, and great nieces and nephews. Especially Haleigh, Emma, and Noah. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a nephew, Roger Hall. Services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at McDonald Funeral Home, 231 Falls Avenue, Wabash, Indiana 46992. Burial will follow in the Memorial Lawns Cemetery in Wabash, Indiana. Visitation for family and friends will be from  9 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home on Saturday. Preferred memorials are to IU Medical Center Transplant Unit, 1801 N SENATE BLVD.
